Enoch L. “Nucky” Johnson, the Republican powerhouse from Atlantic City, dominated New Jersey’s political landscape in the early part of the 20th century. This book is dedicated to permanently preserving and celebrating his colorful life and legacy before the recollections of his accomplishments disappear and are washed out to sea by the sands of time.

I have taken the liberty of recreating some of the dialogue between Nucky and others. I based these conversations on details I discussed with Nucky during the two-year period I represented him during his criminal fine case. I also used excerpts from Nucky’s testimony before the U.S. Senate in 1928 and in his 1941 criminal trial, along with his depositions in his claim against The Saturday Evening Post and David Niven, and his interviews with the FBI in his application for pardon. These transcripts give us insights into Nucky’s true character through his own words.

Many people also told me about the specific personal incidents they shared with Nucky, and are contained in this book. Marie Boyd, who worked in the Atlantic County Treasurer’s Office, was very close to Nucky and his wife Floss for many years. Boyd attended Nucky’s criminal trial, and she and her husband Jimmy, who was Nucky’s right-hand man, were my longtime clients. Senator Frank S. “Hap” Farley, Nucky’s successor and my law partner for 15 years, also shared a great deal of what he knew and remembered about Nucky. Even John Mooney, head of the Atlantic City Vice Squad, who was my client and friend for most of his life, spoke of Nucky in glowing terms.

I also used the background of the actual events in Nucky’s life, from FBI reports, IRS records, trial transcripts, and others listed in the bibliography. All of these sources served to recreate the real life and times of Enoch L. “Nucky” Johnson.

Since my parents produced medical conventions in Atlantic City starting in 1929, they had business dealings with Nucky Johnson. I am told he patted me on the head circa 1935. Anyway back home in NYC Nucky was discussed.

This book provides details to fill out what I remembered. It is absolutely fascinating and well written.

I have been a fan of "Boardwalk Empire" since the first episode on HBO. That creative team made it clear that they changed the character name to "Nucky Thompson" so they would not need to stick to known facts. I have not found any loss of viewing enjoyment from known the actual facts about Nucky Johnson. Actually, as I read this book I go back and look at early episodes again with a fresh eye.

Nucky The Real Story of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Boss eBook Frank J Ferry Esq Reviews

Outstanding, very readable telling of a largely unknown (except to South Jersey residents) local history of how Atlantic City evolved and continue to evolve to this day
I loved this book, I could not put it down. I really got to know this man and who he really was as an individual. He did so much for Atlantic City, it is sad that his dedication to this great city has not been recognized more. The author gave wonderful account of Nucky's life and his first true love. It's an exciting read, I recommend it to anyone who is a bio bug. You'll find it riveting!
This is a great book, very detailed. If you want to know about Nucky Johnson his life and times and Atlantic City this is the book for you. Very well written. I also meet the author in person at my local library and to hear the stories first hand was great and the author was also nice and signed my copy.
I became a huge fan of Boardwalk Empire on HBO, so I wanted to learn more about Nucky. This book gives you the other side of his life from a political position in his life and how our screwed up election process is or at least was so corrupt. Very interesting and would have loved to have met him. But I was 6 when he passed.
Entertaining...living near Atlantic City it gives a great deal of info relative to the history of the area; author could probably have done an entire book digging into the late 20's until the 40's and the influence "organized crime" and boot legging had on the entire SJ shore

Most of the book might be lost on people not familiar with the area....but it was an interesting and easy read
I enjoyed this book since I knew or was accuated with many of the people named the book, espcially the author,Frank Ferry.
Being a huge fan of the 'Boardwalk Empire' I had to read about the real Nucky Johnson. I enjoyed the real antics and foibles of Enoch Johnson. I knew instinctively that many of the TV show' s stories were fabrications or outlandish embellishments of possible true events. For one, the Commodore of the TV show, Louis Buehle in real life, died harmlessly of old age in 1934, not murdered by the fictitious Jimmy Darmady. The Commodore was as important as Nucky Johnson in Atlantic City annals, as he really was the catalyst for most of the early hotels and he built the original Boardwalk. I learned that Nucky was the engine to drive the groundbreaking Convention Center in AC.
I would highly recommend this book to any fan of the TV series and aficionados of early 20th century American crime and history. The author drew much of his information from relatives who knew Nucky Johnson and therefore it's legitimacy is ensured.
